Part of the dying British institution of people who are completely satisfied with their lot, meeting Jim for the first time filled me with warmth. I can't get enough of listening to his stories (true or not..!), and the prospect of going back if he's voted for fills me only with happiness. Lord Short, however, is a very different kettle of fish. Once a strong force in the House of Lords, he had a crisis of conscience and now lives in the fields of Jim's farm, unnoticed by anyone, even Jim.
